10 Unmissable Period Drama Series & Where to Watch Them

Updated: Aug 22, 2024

'In order to appreciate the future, you must remember the past'

While these period drama series are set in the past, it's important to recognize that they may not always represent factual or historical events. We may not learn significant details about key historical moments from them, yet their dedication to capturing the essence of the period can still teach us a great deal.

These period drama series offer a perfect form of escapism, transporting us to times far removed from our present reality. The clothes, customs, technology, food, social hierarchies, and gender roles depicted have all changed drastically since the eras portrayed in the series below. Apart from the universal human emotions that resonate with us, these series allow us to immerse ourselves in different times and be swept away into worlds filled with unique behavioral and lifestyle differences.

1. Downton Abbey

Downton Abbey, one of the most famous and iconic British productions, has even expanded from television to the big screen.

Full cast of Downton Abbey in front of the Abbey

Set in early 1900s Yorkshire (1912-1926), "Downton Abbey" follows the lives of an aristocratic family and their domestic servants. The series takes viewers through pivotal historic moments, from the Titanic disaster and World War I to the Spanish Influenza and the Irish War of Independence, along with various political and economic scandals. It vividly portrays how people of all social statuses navigated these events while exploring the challenges faced by the British aristocracy during its decline.

"Is this an instrument of communication or torture?" The Dowager Countess on the invention of telephones.

At its heart, it is a drama, but it's also filled with romance and comedic moments as characters embrace the introduction of the telephone, refrigerator, electricity, and the fast pace of the modern world.

Number of Seasons:

52 episodes of Downton Abbey aired over six series. Two movies have also been released with a third on the way, set to release in September 2025.

Where to Watch:

2. Call the Midwife

This show breaks my heart in the most beautiful and powerful way. Set in 1960s East London it follows a group of passionate and generous midwives. They live in a simpler time than we do, however, the medical world was perhaps more complex and growing. They battle new technologies, dangerous drugs, discoveries of new vaccines and diseases, and most importantly the introduction of the NHS.

Call the Midwife offers the most inspirational, profound, and inspiring pieces of advice which Vanessa Redgrave so eloquently narrates.

'Some might call it confidence, others name it faith, but if it makes us brave the label doesn’t matter for it’s the thing that frees us to embrace life itself.'

This show reminds us to embrace and enjoy life's little things.

Number of Seasons:

As of 3 March 2024, 113 episodes of Call the Midwife have aired in 13 seasons. There are even Christmas Specials to enjoy and incredible talent to appreciate with appearances from Miranda Hart and Charlotte Ritchie.

Where to Watch:

3. Masters of the Air

Masters of the Air is a literal masterpiece. The worst part? It's only a miniseries, so we won't get more of this perfection. Released on January 26, 2024, Masters of the Air is a war drama series that follows the aerial battles of WWII through the actions of the 100th Bomb Group, a heavy bomber unit in the Eighth Air Force stationed in eastern England.

The key cast members of Masters of the Air in their uniforms

You may never find a period piece as historically accurate as this one, with the creators doing their best to honor the realities, triumphs, horrors, and losses of the war. The characters are based on real men who risked their lives in the bomber group known as the "Bloody 100th." This group was notorious for its bad luck against the German Luftwaffe, earning both a reputation and a great deal of respect. The creators recreated battles and historical events with minimal creative liberties, resulting in what I believe to be one of the best WWII adaptations and the best series of the year.

On that list of best adaptations, you'll find Band of Brothers. Masters of the Air happens to be created by the same greats who previously worked on Band of Brothers—Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg, John Orloff, and Gary Goetzman—along with incredible and, well, attractive talent, including Austin Butler, Callum Turner, Anthony Boyle, Barry Keoghan, Bel Powley, and many more.

Breathtaking music, unbelievable effects, timeless talent, top-notch production, and authentic costumes will completely transport you. It's perfection, it's masterful, and you won't want to miss it.

Number of Seasons:

As I mentioned, there is sadly only one season. But it is a perfect season, and sometimes it is best to leave perfection as is. The season includes 9 episodes with a length time between 44 and 77 minutes.

Where to Watch:

It is an Apple exclusive and for a subscription fee, you can only watch it on Apple TV. It will be worth it, you can even get a free trial just to watch this.

4. Outlander

If you are a lover of Scotland then this will surely satisfy you. If you are a lover of romance then look no further. This is not your usual romance nor does it serve as the typical boy-meets-girl story. It is heart-wrenching, deep and so captivatingly unbound by time.

Clare and Jamie sitting on a rock wall. Jamie in his kilt and Clare in a tartan skirt

Although the appeal is an instant attraction for the more feminine delicacies it is sure to cover all genres from action, drama, and elements of historical time travel. From the music to the locations to the accents to the clothing it will completely sweep you away to 1700 Scotland (For more on Scottish History read here), France, and America with gruesome and intense detail.

Be warned it is not a show for innocent eyes. From raunchy sex scenes and fierce battles, you would perhaps avoid watching it with your parents. But the unconditional love the characters have for each other and their country will quickly captivate you.

Number of Seasons:

There are currently 7 seasons of Outlander with Season 7; Part 2 due to release on Friday 22nd November 2024. 83 episodes of Outlander have aired so far. Season 8 will be the final season of the show due in Mid to late 2025. However, the series is based on a book series written by Diana Gabaldon. There are 9 books published out of the planned 10. So there is still much Outlander to go around.

Where to Watch:

5. Poldark

Poldark is a captivating period drama that stands out as one of the best historical adaptations in recent years. Based on the novels by Winston Graham, the series was brought to life by the talented team of Debbie Horsfield and director, Stephen Woolfenden. It aired from 2015 to 2019 and is set against the stunning backdrop of late 18th-century Cornwall.

The cast of Poldark

At the heart of "Poldark" is Ross Poldark, portrayed by Aidan Turner, who returns to England after fighting in the American Revolutionary War, only to find his world in disarray. His struggle to rebuild his life, confront social injustices, and navigate complex relationships makes for a deeply engaging story. The series also features exceptional performances from a strong supporting cast, including Eleanor Tomlinson as Demelza, Heida Reed as Elizabeth, and Jack Farthing as George Warleggan.

Poldark transports viewers through its breathtaking cinematography, authentic costumes, and sweeping musical score. The show's portrayal of historical events and social issues and its passionate storytelling make it a masterpiece of period drama. It's a series you won't want to miss, offering a perfect blend of romance, drama, and historical intrigue.

Number of Seasons:

The series is complete so you have 5 seasons, 43 episodes, and 16 hours of historical entertainment.

Where to Watch:

6. Miss Scarlet & The Duke

Miss Scarlet & The Duke is a period drama that has quickly become a favorite among fans of mystery and historical fiction. Set in Victorian London, the series follows the daring Eliza Scarlet, played by Kate Phillips, who defies societal norms by becoming the city's first female private detective. With her sharp wit and unyielding determination, Eliza tackles cases that no one else will, all while navigating the challenges of a male-dominated world.

At her side, though often reluctantly, is William "The Duke" Wellington, a gruff and stubborn Scotland Yard inspector portrayed by Stuart Martin. The chemistry between Eliza and The Duke is electric, with their simmering tension providing both a reason to keep coming back and a source of frustration. As much as their relationship will tease you, you have to remember that this show is equally about the empowerment of women in a time when their independence was often stifled.

The series is rich in period detail, from the authentic costumes to the atmospheric London settings. The clever mysteries, combined with the ongoing personal dynamics, make Miss Scarlet & The Duke a must-watch.

Number of Seasons:

There are 4 seasons and 24 episodes to enjoy. Miss Scarlet will return for a 5th season, sadly without The Duke. However, I think we will be pleased with the new face of Tom Durant-Pritchard, who will essentially step into a similar role as our beloved Duke. Replaceable? No. But I'm hopeful. Season 5 is currently filming as we await a release date and trailer.

Where to Watch:

7. Peaky Blinders

"By order of the Peaky Fucking Blinders!" has become a notorious catchphrase in our household. My dad and brother often try to channel the suaveness, style, and confidence of the Shelby brothers—and honestly, who can blame them? In the gritty streets of 1900s Birmingham, Thomas Shelby, portrayed by the magnetic Cillian Murphy, leads a notorious gang in a relentless pursuit to build a better life. Along the way, he battles enemies, lovers, family, and his own inner demons as he expands the family business into a criminal empire.

The Shelbys may commit their share of sinful acts, but you'll find yourself rooting for them anyway. Cillian Murphy's undeniable charisma draws you in, making it hard not to cheer for Thomas, even when he's at his most ruthless.

While the first episode may seem slow and a bit confusing as you familiarize yourself with the characters, it's worth pushing through. Once you're in, the epic cinematography, killer soundtrack, authentic sets, powerful acting, and intense drama will hook you into an obsession. "Peaky Blinders" is more than just a show—it's an experience, and once you get a taste, you'll understand the hype.

Number of Seasons:

There are 6 seasons and 36 episodes. And we thought it ended there. But, just, recently, in July 2024, it was announced that there will be a film. Who knows where it'll take Thomas but I'm ready whenever they are.

Where to Watch:

8. The Crown

The Crown stands out among period dramas for its remarkable accuracy in portraying historical events. From the moment you start watching, you're drawn into the complex and enigmatic world of the British royal family, eager to understand the characters who have shaped history. Each season unveils new layers of these iconic figures, making the show both captivating and enlightening.

As the characters age, new actors are introduced, giving us the chance to see some of Britain's greatest talents and discover emerging stars. This fresh casting approach breathes new life into the series, keeping it dynamic and engaging.

What makes The Crown so enchanting is its stark contrast to our daily lives. The show offers a rare glimpse into the inner workings of a family often hidden beneath layers of expectations, pressures, facades, and public assumptions. The acting is flawless, performed with a level of diligence and precision that brings these historical figures to life.

The Crown isn't just a history lesson—it's a chance to explore the hidden dynamics of one of the world's most famous families, making it an unmissable experience for anyone fascinated by royalty and the complexities of power.

Number of Seasons:

There are 6 seasons and 60 episodes.

Where to Watch:

9. The Gilded Age

The Gilded Age is a must-watch for fans of Downton Abbey and period dramas. Set in late 19th-century New York, the series offers a fascinating look at the social and economic shifts of the era.

The famous upstairs and downstairs dynamic that Julian Fellows has become known for keeps you engaged; revealing the contrasts and tensions between the wealthy elite and their servants.

The cast is exceptional, featuring a blend of seasoned actors, including Carrie Coon and Christine Baranski, and rising stars who bring their characters to life. While you may need to adjust to the American accents, the portrayal of a nation in flux after the Civil War provides a backdrop for those who love historical drama and want to witness America's transformation during this period.

Number of Seasons:

This is still a new series with 2 seasons and 16 episodes. Season 3 is in production and will be released sometime in 2025.

Where to Watch:

10. Harlots

Harlots is a lesser-known gem that's absolutely worth the watch, featuring a stellar cast that includes Lesley Manville and Jessica Brown Findlay. Their performances bring depth and nuance to the story, making this series a standout in the period drama genre. If you're looking for a show with rich historical detail and compelling female-driven narratives, Harlots is a must-see.

This period drama offers a vivid and accurate portrayal of 18th-century London, particularly focusing on the lives of women in the city's notorious sex trade. The show is set in the 1760s and centers around Margaret Wells, a brothel owner, and her two daughters as they navigate the challenges of their world.

This gritty yet vibrant depiction of the period pays close attention to costumes, language, and the social dynamics of the time. Harlots doesn't shy away from the harsh realities faced by women in this era, but it also brings to life the resilience, wit, and camaraderie of its characters.

Number of Seasons:

There are 3 seasons and 24 episodes.

Bonus:

11. Daisy Jones & The Six

Some may not initially think to include Daisy Jones & The Six as a period drama since it deals with more recent history, but it absolutely fits the genre. Set in the 1970s, the show transports you to a different time with its own unique challenges, making it a perfect addition to this list.

Daisy Jones & The Six follows the rise and fall of a fictional rock band, capturing the spirit and cultural shifts of the era. With its focus on the music scene, fashion, and social dynamics of the time, the show offers a nostalgic and authentic look at the 1970s.

The show combines drama, an original soundtrack, and a deep dive into the creative and often tumultuous relationships within the band, all against the backdrop of a vibrant and iconic decade. If you’re interested in a period drama that explores the rock ‘n’ roll lifestyle with a strong sense of time and place, Daisy Jones & The Six is a great choice.

Number of Seasons:

This is a mini-series with 10 episodes.

Where to Watch:

Worth the Mention

  1. Gentleman Jack

  2. The Alienist

  3. Lidia Poët

  4. Mr Selfridges

  5. The Buccaneers

We are blessed with some of the greatest period pieces and I cannot just finish there. I had to split my very long list into categories. Because I bet you're wondering where Bridgerton is or The Marvelous Mrs Maisel.? Well, they have their very own category. Be on standby.
