Some of the Cyclades Best Beaches
Welcome to another installment in the Best Greek Islands series, where cheesy titles take center stage, just for your entertainment. My aim with this series is to ignite your enthusiasm for the wonders of Greece, albeit merely scratching the surface of its vast array of islands.
If you're on the hunt for an island adventure that blends mesmerizing panoramas with intoxicating nightlife, look no further than Ios.
1. The Accommodation
Our top highlight on the island undoubtedly revolves around the accommodation. Opting for a touch of luxury, we indulged in a stay at a hotel boasting the label of a 'spa.' If that doesn't scream sophistication, then I'm not sure what does.
Much like Paradise Beach on Mykonos (Check out another island on our list here), Far Out Club offers an array of accommodation options complemented by restaurants, a pristine beachfront, and a vibrant club scene. Discover their diverse range of accommodations here.
Yes, those are indeed two single beds you're seeing. Despite opting for a slightly more upscale hotel, we decided to go for the cheapest room option available. We may not be a couple from the 19th century in need of separate beds, but we did prioritize having some cash left to get back home. A room with two single beds came to €90 per night per room. (Update 2024: There is a minimum 4-night stay at the price of €146 per night per room) It offered privacy, luxury, beautiful views, and an escape from the party hub of Far Our Beach Club. Just look at the view.
2. The Beaches
No trip to Ios is complete without indulging in its stunning beaches. Indeed, visiting Greece without experiencing its coastal wonders would be a travesty. Of all the islands we explored, it was on the beaches of Ios where we found ourselves truly unwinding. These shores seem to attract a diverse crowd, from laid-back sun-seekers to avid partygoers and water sports enthusiasts alike.
Among the island's beaches, Mylopotas Beach is the most popular. A 4-minute stroll from our hotel, its proximity to Far Out Resort and Club makes it an ideal destination. With its pristine white sands, crystalline waters, and ample space, it's a haven for relaxation. Whether you prefer lounging on rented chairs under umbrellas or opting for a more traditional beach experience with your towel spread out on the soft sand, Mylopotas Beach has something for everyone.
After a day spent perusing your favorite book, savoring cocktails, and trying your hand at various water sports, you can seamlessly transition into an evening of beachside partying just steps away. And if you're up for a belly-filled laugh and your hangover isn't too debilitating, why not give paddleboarding a try? There's nothing quite like watching each other clumsily attempt to maintain balance before inevitably collapsing into the water.
And before you call it a day, don't miss the opportunity to witness the sunset and capture a romantic picture-perfect moment.
There are over 40 beaches in Ios, some not as big as Mylopotas but certainly quieter. Most are close to the center and are easily found with a little exploring. So take a wander. The locals say "Agia Theodoti Beach, Koumpara Beach, and Psathi Beach will reward you with serenity and virgin natural landscapes" Notable secluded beaches include Chamouhades and Pikri Nero. For partying hit Gialos Beach and Manganari Beach.
3. The Sites & Food
Before we party, we must respect the island and the culture. I will not fool you into believing I spent my time exploring historical sites and museums on Ios. In fact, I spent a lot of time on the beach and in the cluuurrbbs.
I recommend a visit to the classic white-washed and blue-domed Ios Cathedral, Evangelismos Cathedral, situated in the heart of Chora, the bustling epicenter of the island.
Ahhhh the Gyro. If you are searching for affordability and perfection in a single meal, then I can assure you that a Gyro will satisfy you in every way. They are ridiculously cheap at a max price of €5 (Updated 2024) and delicious. You can find stalls located around the island and conveniently open for an alcohol-consuming midnight meal. Captain Gyros has a great reputation. You MUST not leave Greece without trying a Gyro.
I will direct you to the professionals now for more details on the must-sees of Ios.
4. The Partying
Last but certainly not least, when it comes to traveling to Ios, is the party scene. After immersing yourself in the city, savoring the local cuisine, enjoying the accommodations, and lounging on the beaches, it's time to dive into the vibrant nightlife and experience the legendary parties of Ios.
The Lost Boys Bar
A fantastic choice to kickstart your evening adventures. True to its name, it offers an escape from the ordinary. Featuring beer pong, a delightful array of cocktails, and a laid-back ambiance, it's the perfect spot to set the tone for the night ahead. Dive deeper into what they offer by checking out more information here.
Lotus Bar
This open-air bar is a must-visit for expertly crafted cocktails. If you've never ventured into the world of Absinthe and seek a sophisticated beginning to your evening, look no further. Enjoy the live music and the vibrant atmosphere.
Fun Pub
Whether you're keen to catch the latest sporting events or engage in some lively drinking games, Fun Pub is the place to be. Offering a dynamic atmosphere and a plethora of drinking challenges and games, it provides yet another exciting option to kick off your night in style.
Shush Bar
Aptly named for its unique concept, this venue offers a silent disco experience. Ease into the dancing mood by selecting your preferred music genre from three options: RnB and HipHop, Electric House, and Pop Hits. Each genre corresponds to a distinct colour displayed on your headphones, allowing you to easily identify what your friends are grooving to and seamlessly switch over to join them. Don't forget to take off your headphones at some point to revel in the sight of fellow partygoers engaging in their own brand of awkward dancing.
At this point, I have begun to forget the many more pubs and clubs we came upon. But that's the best thing about Ios. You just walk around and walk into something you like the look of. You're sure to have a good time. They are notorious for their drinking games and challenges. If you are prepared to down 10 shots in a row or get slapped in the face with paint in order to win a t-shirt then Ios is the place for you.
I've undoubtedly missed several more pubs and clubs we stumbled upon during our time in Ios. Yet, that's precisely the beauty of this island, you simply wander around and come upon hidden gems that catch your eye. Renowned for their wild drinking games and challenges, Ios establishments aren't for the faint of heart. Whether you're ready to down 10 shots in a row or brave getting slapped in the face with paint just to snag a t-shirt, Ios is the ultimate destination for those seeking unforgettable party experiences.
