The Precious Gem of the Aegen Sea
When aiming to travel to Greece, Santorini is unavoidable. It is a perfect depiction of iconic Greece and it offers everything a Greek lifestyle should. From historical sites to incredible views and sunsets to food and partying to, of course, ultimate romance. However, with its status as one of the best Greek islands to visit, Santorini's popularity inevitably draws crowds and leads to higher prices, particularly during the summer months when eager travelers flock to its shores.
Santorini is not just a single island; it's a picturesque group of islands that has evolved over millennia through a series of volcanic eruptions. In fact, one of these eruptions led to the creation of an entirely new island as a fragment detached from the main landmass. Amidst its volcanic origins and stunning vistas, Santorini has earned a reputation as a romantic haven. It's not uncommon for visitors to witness heartwarming proposals against the backdrop of its blue-domed buildings and breathtaking landscapes, we sure witnessed one. What truly sets Santorini apart, however, are its captivating sights and experiences that continue to draw travelers from around the globe.
1. The Sites
Fira
While it may sound broad, Fira, as the capital city of Santorini since the 18th century, is unavoidable as the heartbeat of the island. Simply take a stroll through the city, wander down narrow and picturesque alleyways, and stop to take in those postcard views. With amazing restaurants and shops to explore you won't get bored. As it is the center of Santorini you can expect a considerable amount of people. Unfortunately, we sometimes have to sacrifice a little comfort to experience the ultimate Greek adventure.
For an epic view, good drinks, and good vibes you can head to Tropical Bar to get but a little taste of the Santorini nightlife. But before we party, we must eat and we must indulge in the celebrated seafood Greece has to offer. You can head to Fanari for another incredible view with humbling and welcoming service.

Oia
While it's the second most popular city on the island, Oia offers a welcome break from the crowds that often inundate Santorini's more bustling areas. However, there's one notable exception: sunset. Oia becomes filled with both tourists and locals alike as everyone fights to witness its renowned sunset views. Once you've secured the ultimate vantage point, it's best to stay put and soak in the breathtaking scenery. Additionally, Oia boasts an array of fantastic restaurants with perfect views, though such luxuries typically come with a higher price tag.
Exploring Santorini's Views: Hikes, Walks & Funicular
I think for some 'funicular' was more appealing in that heading. By this point, I am sure you have noted that 'views' and 'scenery' are the defining words for Santorini. Therefore I have to mention all the options to experience all possible views.
For the adventurous souls, you can embark on a hike from Fira to Oia. The 10km marked trail offers a rewarding experience, though not without its demands, particularly under the scorching sun and numerous inclines. It's advisable to set out prepared, preferably in the morning, and embrace both the journey and the sense of accomplishment upon completing one of the island's most memorable activities.
For panoramic views that are equally awe-inspiring but perhaps less strenuous, consider a shorter walk to the highest point of the Caldera islands, Imerovigli.
To witness Santorini from a unique perspective, descend to the renowned Santorini port, Fira Skala. While managing the 587 steps downward is manageable for many, the ascent back up may necessitate the use of Santorini's Cable Car, ensuring a comfortable return journey with unrivaled views along the way.

Please, please don't ride the donkeys. There is simply no need to put these animals through more, don't be a part of the problem.
Akrotiri
Delve into Greece's rich past by visiting one of the most significant archaeological sites in the Aegean Sea: Akrotiri. Often compared to Pompeii, Akrotiri offers a glimpse into a fascinating chapter of ancient civilization. Unlike Pompeii's tragic fate, Akrotiri's inhabitants had vacated the city prior to a volcanic eruption, sparing lives but preserving history in ash. Today, ongoing excavations at Akrotiri provide valuable insights for historians, who eagerly theorize about the lives and culture of this ancient community.

2. The Beaches
Thanks to Santorini's volcanic landscape, the island offers more than just your typical white-washed sand beaches. Here, you'll discover beaches with striking red, black, and white sands. Among these, the Red Beach stands out as with its iconic and unique hue. I remember being so captivated, that I paused for a solid 10 minutes just to absorb the breathtaking view and catch my breath after the walk to reach it.
What's remarkable is that these distinct beaches, Red Beach, White Beach, and the black sand beach of Perissa, are all conveniently located to each other. The best way to experience them is by boat; in fact, the White Beach is only accessible by sea. Opting for the taxi boats provides a superior approach to visiting all three. For a mere €10 for a return trip, you can leisurely explore each beach. Taxi boats depart every 30 minutes. With sweeping views, unique colors, and warm ocean swims awaiting you, a full day dedicated to these beaches is well worth it.
Note; The boat does not dock at the white beach, you will have to swim to the shore with water at about waist height.
3. The Accommodation
I wish I could say that I spent my time in one of those impressive hotels, you know the ones with your own private infinity pools? The one you always see on Instagram? Unfortunately, that was not the case. I was on a budget experience, aiming to spend my money on experiences rather than accommodation. However, I will gladly venture back to Santorini any day to have that high-end hotel lifestyle. I can also say, with great confidence, that spending a little more money on a private room that you feel comfortable coming back to sleep in, is so worth it.
We spent our time sleeping at Fira Backpackers.
As far as hostels go, it was notably clean and offered a higher quality experience compared to others. We stayed in a 4-dorm room with a little balcony (this was the only highlight) and a shared bathroom at the price of €120 for 2 nights for 2 people. This rate was quite reasonable, particularly considering the context of Santorini's typically higher prices. (Update 2024; This has now doubled to €240, €60 per person per night). There are different pricing options depending on the dorm you prefer. (ie; 10-bed mixed dorms to private rooms).
However, I must briefly touch upon a less-than-pleasant topic: the state of piping in Greece. With its ancient history comes ancient water piping infrastructure, which unfortunately hasn't quite kept pace with the island's growing population. One cannot simply flush their used toilet paper where one usually would. You have to dispose of this in a bin. As you can imagine this is an unpleasant experience in a shared bathroom with people you don't know. Not to mention I was the only girl in a room with 3 boys.
Nevertheless, our hostel boasted an excellent location near the center of Fira at a reasonable cost, making it an ideal choice for those on a budget. However, it's not an experience I'm eager to repeat. With age comes a greater appreciation for a touch of luxury now and then
If you are going to Santorini then go all in for that quintessential experience with these hotels.
Embracing the Essence of Santorini
From its captivating landscapes to its ancient history, Santorini offers a variety of experiences for travelers of all tastes. Whether exploring its diverse beaches, delving into its archaeological wonders, or simply soaking in its panoramic views, the island never fails to leave a lasting impression. While budget accommodations may provide a practical option for some, luxury's allure reminds us that a touch of indulgence can elevate the travel experience. In the end, Santorini's timeless charm continues to draw us back.
